Brad, the earlier monday and Tuesday of that same week you later arrived in were perfect. We were on Panther Beach and it was about 73, clear with a slight breeze. Perfect. I had been scouting and hanging out on those beaches north of Santa Cruz for a full week before that and I only remember one or two days where I had to put on my "hoodie" because of the cool wind. Other days were warm and sometimes almost "hot", especially down on the beach where the climate is often different than up by the cars.
So, there is a big luck factor in all of this.
Also, you said: "if there's fog, forget the beaches" Actually this is not true. The fog usually burns off by mid day and even if it does not in SF, once you get down approaching Davenport there is commonly a break in the clouds to a clear sky. This is a common phenomenon it seems.
Just adding some perspective.
