I just returned from Sauvie Island for the first really nice day this summer and want to verify all that was said above. Most people , however, were nude. I'm a guy and I sat down nude with my male friend on the sand when a couple of very attractive youngish women sat about 40 feet in front of us facing the water and proceeded to strip nude. We all were in a large number of people on about 500 feet of the beach -a safe place, not deserted. Very casual, natural and comfortable. My friend and I went walking through the little paths near the tree line and came upon a discrete male/female couple involved in some serious foreplay which they halted (not when we approached respectfully) but when a number of fully clothed people approached with outright curiosity and disrespect. That really put the skids on the whole lovely thing. Nevertheless, such nice little scenes still happen often enough (though not like the "old days") that the beach is welll worth the effort. Besides, it is one of the most lovely and scenic places in Oregon far as I'm concerned.

: The beach areas (Collins Beach and the surrounding sand) can either be expansive or under water (depends on the Corps of Engineers and irrigation flow). However, even when the Columbia River is high, there is still plenty of room for sunning.
: The ratio of women to men is not "good." On the hottest August Sundays, you will still see something like an 80/20 ratio of men to women. As for single women, it is not generally the case...rather, two or three women may be together; but mostly, it's couples. The cops do patrol (looking for cars that do not have the Sauvie Island parking permit) the parking lots and the beach areas. Having sex at Collins Beach is not a good idea; there are few places to do that sort of thing (some woods between the beach and the parking lot) and I think if you were to be caught/convicted, you would be listed as a "sex offender" in Oregon.
: As far as clothing is concerned, about half the people are nude and the other half clothed or topless. There are a lot of Hispanic gawkers at Collins Beach; not simply single men but wandering groups who sit and watch the couples who do go nude.
: From the late 80's until the mid 90's (1997?), there used to be a lot of nudist activity at Collins Beach. However, in my opinion, things have dropped a bit; especially since the recent lawsuits over the boundaries of Collins Beach (do an internet search for more specific info). If you are looking for a chance of public sex at a nude beach in the Portland area, you would be better off going to Rooster Rock. I've seen some hetero action there, but in recent years it's become more of a homosexual meeting area.
: My best luck at voying public sex has been at Cougar Hot Springs, Wind River Hot Springs, and the Inner City Hot Tubs (on a Friday/Saturday night).
