The organizers of the Columbus Day Regatta emphasize they have nothing to do with the naked boat party floats that go on just off Elliott Key in Biscayne Bay during and after their boat race . They don't want anyone to think there's that much fun to be had on this holiday weekend. Fact is, the flashing partiers call their floating fleet of hundreds of yachts and cruisers the "Columbus Day regatta". So which is the real regatta?

Boat Party Nudity Galore
Boat race? What boat race? Thousands of boats going nowhere, anchored together for a weekend of sun-baked bare skin and non-stop dancing, drinking and nakedness. A water-logged Mardi Gras of wild abandon. Don't bring your kids, and have a designated non-drinking person on your boat in charge of safety. You'll need it!
Not unlike the boat parties of Lake Havasu or Party Cove, this Columbus Day float may be bigger and crazier. Toplessness is common, as well as full nudity and there have been reports of people getting it on on the starboard bow, all in honor of Christopher Columbus.
There is a boat race happening the same day, however. The Columbus Day Regatta started in 1952 to pay homage to Christopher Columbus, when an Italian Count donated a bronze statue along with the order to erect in within the Florida Keys. Over the years a sailing trek from the mainland to the keys became part of the annual celebration and over time it became a race with hundreds of boats. Taking place on Biscayne Bay, it's one of the year's highlights. While the prestige of the event is in the race, some really interesting things take place over the course of the weekend.
To race in the event you need to have your boat certified which you can do through the site. There is a fee to race which varies year to year and by boat size. As usual there are rentals available for people who just want to be on the water, or you can bring your own. Docking and fuel prices are always subject to change, as are hotel rates and such. There's no shortage of motels, hotels and trailer parks in Florida so get your friends together and make a trip outof it. Be sure to send us pics as well!
