Bare to Breakers Nude Run - San Francisco - California

Running in the nude makes you live longer!

Well maybe not - but you sure do feel good while you're doing it! Bare to Breakers is an annual tradition that started around 1978 when a drunken Lesli Josephson decided to run the Bay to Breakers course (an annual clothed-run) in the buff. She and others ran in it nude in the following years and a tradition was formed. Years later a man named Ed Van Sicklin coined the term "Bare-to-Breakers" and immortalized it on hats.

Who runs naked?

These days, hundreds are running naked both for fun and as a demonstration of body-freedom. Anyone can join in and it's an important part of San Franciscan tradition. Everyone should try it once!

The event is an official race where legitimate runners negotiate the 12km course that begins in the city at Main and Howard streets and makes its way through the Golden Gate Park and ends down at the water's edge at the 'breakers'. There are cash prizes involved and it keeps the participants in 'running-shape' for the longer races and marathons throughout the year. Since this is San Francisco, after all, it only seems fitting that a naked crew of baseball-hat-wearing enthusiasts would not only join-in, but become as important to the event as the runners themselves.

Nudity is a given, but there are many other aspects to Bare to Breakers that are sometimes overlooked. Bodypainting is popular and there are musical acts as well as people performing all sorts of music and other interesting spectacles during the run. It's a day where people (clothed or not) get together and have some fun while staying fit. San Francisco is one of the most tolerant places in the world so don't worry about being hassled too much for dropping the trousers and letting it hang loose. Just make sure to clothe yourself immediately after passing the finish line as the law dictates.

You're more than welcome to run with the crowd for free, but you're also encouraged to register with the official Bay to Breakers organizers as well as with the Bare to Breakers Booster's club, which is a small charge but allows access to a number of events and some swag from the event organizers and sponsors. It's also a great way to show support for the efforts of all involved. You should have no trouble finding a place to stay in the city: hotels, b&b's and hostels are abundant, but as usual, book well before you leave.
